The Sardinia Traditional and Artistic Bread Archive
In the island of Sardinia, Italy, many still bake bread at home. Some bakeries will sell bread shaped like a dragon, an animal, or a mythological figure. Parents will even create toys out of bread in the form of dinosaurs, bags, and shoes.
For special events, such as Easter and weddings, these “bread sculptures” are often given as an expression of good wishes, showcasing high levels of imagination and artistic ability. More intricate ones will be finely painted and include clothing, such as the Easter bread and egg dolls.
